X is for Xanth #atozchallenge #AZchat

xanthToday, I pay tribute to the Xanth series of (to date) 38 fantasy novels written by Piers Anthony. I read and loved them when I was in high school, but I haven’t read past book 12, Man From Mundania.

The series is set in a magical land called Xanth (I believe it’s from the second “syllable” in Piers Anthony’s name). The map strongly resembles Florida, his home state.

Book 1, A Spell For Chameleon, introduces us to Bink, a young man who seems to have no magical talent. Everyone in Xanth must show they have magical ability by age 25, so he’s up for deportation to Mundania, a land without magic. Bink goes on a long and involved quest to see if he has a magical talent (for those who love HEA, everything ends well, but people who have reread the book much more recently than I have reservations about some story elements).

I want to mention Anthony’s other series that I love much more than the Xanth novels. You will not regret checking out the Apprentice Adept series that begins with Split Infinity and the Incarnations of Immortality starting with On a Pale Horse.

I’ve never read any of those books, but I like the premise of book one. I certainly don’t want to be deported to Mundania! How playful that the fantasy world resembles Florida. Nice touch! Had me confused, too, when your post was first loading in – lol! Geography is not my strong suit, but still!
